Valentine's Day

Cupid- Draw Back Your Bow and Let Your Arrow Flow
By: Jean Harper

“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.” ~ William Shakespeare

From Your Valentine-   a Catholic Bishop Named Valentine?!

Next Monday is Valentine’s Day!  When you rush out to get a card and/or a gift for your “Valentine” do you know what you are celebrating?  The story isn’t a pretty one but I will give you a summary just in case, like me, you never thought to find out.

The story of Valentine’s Day began during the Roman Empire. Every February the Lupercian Festival took place in honor of the God of Fertility. During this festival young men, of course, would choose their mate. Along came Emperor Claudius to change everything! Fearing that men would not want to leave their wives (for good reason) he outlawed all marriages. Of course that didn’t stop “cupid” with his arrows of love therefore many young couples still desired to be married. Bishop Valentine began secretly marrying couples and when Emperor Claudius found out- well, he wasn’t happy and had him beheaded. Isn’t that romantic?!  It gets more romantic- the day he was to be beheaded he wrote one last note to his "Valentine" and signed it-  “from your Valentine”.

Enough of the negative!  Valentine’s Day is a special day for lovers and if you don’t want to spend a lot of money this year how about some thoughtful gifts. Here are a few great examples:

  1. Write a Poem
  2. Sing your “Valentine” a song and dance in the living room
  3. How about a private dance- ooh la la!
  4. Cuddle up in bed in the middle of the day and just talk- or not!
  5. Read him/her a story
  6. Start at the toes and give kisses all the way to the top of the head- no stopping in the middle now!
  7. Watch old movies and make popcorn
  8. Start laughing and keep laughing for about 10 minutes straight
  9. Repeat- “You are the most beautiful or handsome man or woman I have EVER seen!
  10. Other ideas but will keep them to myself!

Happy Valentine’s Day to All and special thanks to Bishop Valentine! Let the Love Flow- Just Let Go!

Listen to this Valentine Song-  Could this be his Valentine Gift? Enjoy!
