What's Your Groovy Kind of Love?

What’s Your Groovy Kind of Love?
By Jean Harper

There are all kinds of love in this world but never the same love twice ~F. Scott Fitzgerald

In the lyrics of the 1988, Phil Collins release of “Groovy Kind of Love” he sings:

When I'm feeling blue, all I have to do
Is take a look at you, then I'm not so blue
When you're close to me, I can feel your heart beat
I can hear you breathing in my ear

Wouldn't you agree, baby you and me, we've got a groovy kind of love
~Songwriters-Toni Wine and Carole Bayer Sager

When I was in high school I memorized and recited the poem, “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe in front of my English class. I guess I have been a bit of a lover and a bit “dramatic” most of my life. I was proud of the fact that I memorized such a long poem. As a reminder of this great poem and story I have included it below:

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Love is the most incredible of all feelings in this world. It comes in so many ways that it is almost impossible to predict. In the human expression of love there’s platonic love with no strings and no sexual intentions attached, the unrequited love filled with heartache, and the romantic love filled with butterflies and bliss. A deeper unconditional love, is a love that is totally selfless and given to someone even if this act does not benefit her/him in any way. Whether the love is returned or not, the person with unconditional love for another continues to love. As confusing, happy or even painful as it may come, love is still something that we all look forward to finding and sharing with someone.

In addition to the expression of love for a person, some love to go to the opera or musical theater to be transported by beautiful music, others go because the heart and soul is inspired by being in the presence of performers that seem to have received their gifts from God. Still others adore the dazzling sets, lighting, costumes, and dancers who seem to magically take them away. Other loves or passions are found in hobbies or activities such as photography, yoga, art, and many other forms of expression. There is the love of boating, motorcycles, and the list goes on and on.

I love "love" and the feelings that come with it. As I think over my own life, I realize that I have been blessed with all of the types of love that have been mentioned here, and as poet, Charles McCay wrote “To have lived is to have loved.”
